About Dr. Gilbert –

Dr. Gilbert is a magna cum laude graduate of Harvard Unversity, where she received the Psychology Department Faculty Prize for her original research on fear of success in anorexic young women.  She received an M.A. in political science from the University of Pennsylvania, and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of South Florida, where she received the top scholar prize in her graduating class.

Dr. Gilbert was a professor in the Psychology Department and Women's Studies Program at Howard University for eight years, and was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in 2007.  She has served on the Board of the Washington Society for the Study of Eating Disorders and Obesity since 1998, acting as the organization's president for six years.

Dr. Gilbert is the author of numerous book chapters and peer-reviewed articles on eating disorders and body image, including “Body Shame in Childhood and Adolescence,” “The Media’s Role in Body Image and Eating Disorders,” "Eating Disorders in Women of Color," and “Feminist Perspectives of Eating Disorders.”

In therapy, Dr. Gilbert helps adolescents and adults to become more aware of hunger and satiety signals they may have learned to ignore, often due to parental or social pressures encouraging them to eat beyond fullness.  She helps them to identify their own personal emotional triggers for eating and overeating, and to replace these behaviors with healthier methods of coping.

Because eating can be a way of suppressing uncomfortable emotions, such as anxiety and anger, she helps individuals express their thoughts and feelings more assertively.  She helps people with body image concerns identify familial, societal and social pressures to look a certain way and helps them challenge, rather than succumbing to these pressures.
