Licensed Clinical Psychologist

Licensed Clinical Psychologists have obtained a doctoral degree (i.e., a Ph.D. or a Psy.D. - Doctor of Psychology) and then passed the licensing requirements of their State of residence.  Their training qualifies them for a wide range of clinical, research, and teaching positions in universities, elementary and secondary schools, health care services, private industry, and government.  Admission to American Psychological Association (APA) accredited doctoral programs is extraordinarily competitive.

A doctoral degree generally requires 5 to 7 years of graduate study, culminating in a dissertation.  In addition to the typical 4 years of course work, clinical and research training occurs throughout this period.  The clinical training usually takes place in hospitals or other health care settings.  In addition, there is a full-time one year internship, typically during the 5th, 6th or 7th year.  After completing this internship and doctoral dissertation, many individuals additionally pursue post-doctoral clinical fellowships for one or more years.

After completing their degree, clinical psychologists may become licensed by accruing several thousand hours of supervised clinical training and by passing a national licensing exam and, depending upon the State, possibly an additional state written and/or oral licensing exam.  After becoming licensed, most states require clinical psychologists to meet continuing education requirements every year for license renewal.
